History of Scouting In The Bahamas 1913-2012 Some five years after Lt. General Robert Baden-Powell held his experimental camp on Brownsea Island of the coast of England. Scouting reached the Bahamas late in 1912. Miss Evelyn Lobb, who was at that time a member of the staff at government house, was instrumental in forming the first Bahamas Scout Troop. This troop was attached to the Nassau Grammar School and was quickly followed by other troops, The second an open group the third sponsored by St Matthews Church and two groups one in Inagua and Exuma. The Bahamas Association, as it was then called came into being in February 1913, and was officially recognized by Imperial Headquarters in London on March 19th 1913, and was named The Bahamas Branch Boy Scouts Association. In 1912 Baden-Powell had toured the Caribbean but did not visit the Bahamas. It may well have been the publicity surrounding his tour which prompted Evelyn Lobb to introduce Scouting to the Bahamas. more... | ![]() |
